Granjero boliviano ayuda a descubrir huellas de dinosaurios
Bolivia. (Reuters)- El granjero boliviano Primo Rivera se había preguntado por mucho tiempo sobre las marcas en una rocosa colina cerca de su casa.Paleontólogos solucionaron el misterio este mes: se trata de huellas de dinosaurios fosilizadas, las más antiguas en Bolivia.
“Cuando estaba aquí desde chango solía venir a ver siempre las huellas (…) yo no sabía de qué eran”, dijo Rivera, de 35 años, quien vive en la provincia sureña de Chuquisaca.
Las huellas fosilizadas que intrigaron a Rivera por dos décadas según estudios preliminares tendrían cerca de 140 millones de años, mucho más antiguas que otras de dinosaurios encontradas en el país andino.
“Las huellas que hemos encontrado tienen su importancia en que son las más antiguas de Bolivia, pero además son las huellas de dinosaurios acorazados (Anquilosaurios) más antiguas del Hemisferio Sur”, dijo el paleontólogo argentino Sebastián Apesteguia en Buenos Aires.
El especialista, quien dirigió una expedición de dos semanas auspiciada por el gobierno regional de Chuquisaca, cree que las huellas pertenecen a tres tipos de dinosaurios distintos, incluyendo al Anquilosaurio, un herbívoro acorazado.
Algunas de las huellas medían alrededor de 35 centímetros de largo, sugiriendo que los dinosaurios eran de un tamaño mediano, de cerca de nueve o 10 metros de largo, agregó.
Cerca de las huellas más grandes, paleontólogos encontraron otras más pequeñas que probablemente pertenecían a dinosaurios bebés, indicando que las crías recibieron algún tipo de cuidado, dijo Apesteguia.
Rivera dijo que vio las huellas por primera vez hace unos 20 años pero nunca pudo descubrir qué eran.
Hace unos pocos años, visitó un parque de dinosaurios cerca de Sucre, la capital regional de Chuquisaca, y notó que las huellas de dinosaurios exhibidas en el parque se parecían a los agujeros cerca del hogar de sus padres.

“Da la casualidad que a este hombre (Rivera) las huellas siempre le habían llamado la atención de niño, pero nunca las había asociado a ningún animal en especial”, dijo el paleontólogo Pablo Gallina, quien junto a Apesteguia trabaja para la Fundación de Historia Natural Félix de Azara en Argentina.
