Ariel Sigler firma contra la ley que permitiría los viajes de estadounidenses a Cuba
CUBA. (AP)- Cinco días después de su excarcelación por cuestiones de salud, el disidente Ariel Sigler agregó su nombre a una carta firmada por centenares de opositores que condenan abiertamente una legislación que levantaría las restricciones de Washington para que los estadounidenses viajen a Cuba.
La carta, enviada el jueves por correo electrónico a reporteros extranjeros en La Habana, tomó la postura contraria a una declaración de la semana pasada que apoyaba la misma iniciativa.
Aquella declaración fue firmada por 74 disidentes, muchos de ellos con notoriedad internacional, como Elizardo Sánchez, Guillermo Fariñas y la bloguera Yoani Sánchez.
La iniciativa de ley en cuestión fue presentada el 23 de febrero por el legislador demócrata Collin Peterson, e impediría al presidente de Estados Unidos prohibir los viajes a Cuba o bloquear transacciones requeridas para realizar tales viajes.
Además, impediría a la Casa Blanca detener transferencias directas entre bancos estadounidenses y cubanos. Ello facilitaría al gobierno de la Isla pagar las compras de alimentos y productos agropecuarios que hace a empresas estadounidenses.
La carta del jueves, firmada por centenares de ex presos políticos, consideró que ser benevolente con la “dictadura” significaría solidaridad con los “opresores” de la nación cubana.
Ariel Sigler fue excarcelado el pasado 12 de junio, parapléjico y muy enfermo después de siete años de prisión. Es parte del grupo de 75 disidentes condenados a penas de hasta 28 años en la primavera de 2003.
Antes de ser encarcelado había sido boxeador y disfrutaba de un excelente estado físico. Las múltiples enfermedades que padece ahora las adquirió en prisión, según sus familiares.
