Los años dorados

Tengo un amigo que sufre una frecuente pesadilla. Cree sentir detonaciones de armas de fuego. Se despierta bañado en sudor. Tenía 9 años cuando trepado en la tapia del cementerio de Manzanillo, presenció, sin ser visto, el fusilamiento de un grupo de soldados del anterior régimen. Los ejecutaron al lado de una fosa común, al fondo del camposanto. Era temprano en la mañana y hacía frío.
Escenas violentas poblaron la niñez de mi generación. No habían llegado los juegos virtuales de guerras ni las películas de Hannibal o Terminator, pero había triunfado una revolución que proponía la construcción del paraíso. Los paredones de fusilamiento fueron sus cimientos.
Aún recuerdo las imágenes en la televisión o las revistas. Competían con los seriales de Bat Masterson, el Llanero Solitario o Patrulla de Caminos. Alternaban con los anuncios de los cigarros Partagás, el jabón Candado o la cerveza Hatuey.
Un sombrero negro de alas anchas que, tras la descarga del pelotón de fusileros, saltaba por los aires. El cuerpo de su propietario, un coronel del ejército derrotado, vestido de civil, atado a un poste, desmadejado. ¿O saltó el sombrero por el tiro de gracia que también hizo volar, generosamente, su masa encefálica?
Hubo varias secuencias fotográficas de fusilamientos. Borrosas, fuera de foco, como si se hubieran tomado de prisa y con susto. Después de todo, los fusilamientos eran algo inédito en la República de Cuba, regida por la Constitución de 1940
Una de esas secuencias es la ejecución de un oficial, también con ropa de paisano, en el patio del cuartel de Santa Clara, en los primeros días de enero de 1959. Un joven delgado, de camisa clara y copiosa barba negra, dio el tiro de gracia. ¿Con una Luger? Inmutable. Sus zapatos de puntera estrecha, milagrosamente relucientes, no se mancharon de sangre. Era el comandante René Rodríguez.
Una amiga de mi hermana estaba enamorada de él. Nunca lo vio en persona, pero decía que el comandante rebelde era más apuesto que Tony Curtis y más machazo que Rock Hudson. Tal vez porque mataba. Los gestos guerreros y las barbas de los matadores de esbirros excitaban a las quinceañeras y a sus aburridas mamás.
Después de todo, los fusilados eran sólo eso: esbirros de la dictadura. Las fotos de sus víctimas, acribilladas a balazos, torturadas, siempre chorreantes de sangre, mucha sangre, aparecían profusamente en la revista Bohemia y en los periódicos. Imponentes, morbosas en los detalles, precisas en el horror, servían de justificación a la expedita justicia revolucionaria.
Cuando la amiga de mi hermana que suspiraba por el gallardo comandante barbudo se fue con sus padres a Miami, ya habían quitado de la televisión los anuncios, las series americanas y los fusilamientos.
No quedaban batistianos que llevar al paredón. Entonces empezaron a fusilar a discreción, en los fosos de La Cabaña o en las estribaciones del Escambray, a alzados y conspiradores. Muchos de ellos aún vestían de verde olivo. Los periódicos rara vez hablaban de las ejecuciones y los juicios sumarísimos. Sólo mostraban las fotos de las víctimas de la contrarrevolución.
Mi niñez y adolescencia discurrió entre discursos luctuosos, armas soviéticas y deprimentes noticieros, tan poblados de cadáveres, heridos y mutilados, que quitaban el apetito y el sueño. Aún hoy, en las funerarias, evito mirar a los difuntos en la caja. Además soy un firme enemigo de las guerras y de la pena de muerte y no me gustan las películas de asesinatos. ¡Que voy a hacer! Son sólo algunas de las manías que me quedaron por crecer en los años dorados de la revolución.
