Dominicanos y boricuas.. a la batalla!!
ISLA MARGARITA. (AP)- República Dominicana y Puerto Rico, ancestrales rivales deportivos, se miden esta tarde en el primer partido de la cuarta jornada de la Serie del Caribe que se celebra en el estadio Nueva Esparta de la venezolana Isla de Margarita.
Los recientes descalabros de Puerto Rico en la arena internacional han mermado el brillo de la otrora potencia mundial de la pelota, pero en nada afectaron la enconada rivalidad con sus vecinos dominicanos.
Para los Leones del Escogido dominicanos ganar el viernes significaría extender su invicto a 4-0 y asegurar un empate en el primer lugar del campeonato. El Escogido solamente ha conquistado dos títulos de Serie del Caribe, el último en 1990 en Miami.
Para los Indios de Mayagüez boricuas una victoria los colocaría en marca de 2-2 y en una envidiable posición para aspirar a la tercera corona de su historia y la primera desde 1992. Un revés, sepultaría sus pretensiones.
En la inauguración de la serie, el martes, el Escogido venció a Mayagüez 2-1 en un gran duelo de lanzadores entre el cubano Raúl Valdés y el puertorriqueño Mario Santiago, que se decidió por jonrón solitario del norteamericano Kevin Barker en el cierre de la sexta entrada.
“He escuchado historia acerca de esta rivalidad y comprendo muy bien que no es un partido más cuando nos enfrentamos”, dijo el derecho Andrew Baldwin, el lanzador seleccionado por Mako Oliveras, el manager de Mayagüez, para el encuentro de esta tarde.
El capataz del Escogido, el norteamericano Ken Oberkfell, enviará al derecho Félix Díaz, quien tuvo marca de 2-0 y efectividad de 0.55 en la temporada regular quisqueyana y luego porcentaje de efectividad de 2.55 en el largo playoff semifinal.

“Estamos en la pelea. Esto es una inyección de (vitamina) B-12 para el equipo”, comentó Oliveras sobre la victoria boricua ante los aztecas.
Puerto Rico, que ha participado en todas las ediciones de la Serie del Caribe desde su creación en 1949, es el segundo país más ganador, pero los clubes boricuas no celebran desde la edición del 2000, que se realizó en Santo Domingo. Dominicana ha ganado ocho de las últimas 13 series.
