TENIS-Los Estadounidenses prefieren las raquetas a la TV
LOS ANGELES. (Reuters)- El tenis ha dejado los clubes de campo y se convirtió en uno de los deportes de más rápido crecimiento en Estados Unidos, con sus habitantes abandonando las canchas tradicionales debido a su alto costo en medio de la crisis económica.
El Abierto de Estados Unidos se inicia la próxima semana, pero, si las recientes tendencias de audiencia son un indicativo, menos gente estará atenta al evento en el país respecto de años anteriores.
Actualmente, los estadounidenses están más propensos a tomar una raqueta que un control remoto.
El número de personas que juega al tenis aumentó en 18,5 millones, un 43 por ciento, de 2000 a 2009, según la Asociación de Fabricantes de Productos Deportivos (SGMA).
Esta cifra marca el crecimiento más alto en todos los deportes tradicionales.
Por su parte, el golf, que siempre ha estado estrechamente asociado con el tenis por sus raíces en los clubes de campo, ha visto alguna disminución.
La SGMA dijo que el golf cayó cinco por ciento el año pasado, incluso antes de que estallara el escándalo de Tiger Woods.
Los expertos dicen que esta locura por el tenis no es un fenómeno pasajero, como fue el auge en el país en la década de 1970, cuando Jimmy Connors, Billie Jean King y Arthur Ashe dominaron el deporte y provocaron que los aficionados intentaran emular a sus ídolos.

En 1994, la revista Sports Illustrated publicó un artículo titulado “¿Está el tenis muerto?”, escrito en un momento en que la participación del deporte estaba en uno de sus puntos más bajos, provocando que los líderes del sector trataran de atraer a nuevos jugadores.
Así fue como en 1998 la USTA firmó un compromiso de 36 millones de dólares por varios años para impulsar el tenis a nivel local.
La cifra ahora ha aumentado y la federación local dice que actualmente gasta más de 40 millones al año en estas iniciativas.
Fabricantes de productos relacionados al tenis como Wilson, Head y Prince también invirtieron millones de dólares y sus instructores han ofrecido clases gratuitas en parques públicos para descubrir nuevos talentos.
Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo, la audiencia del tenis en el país ha caído en los últimos años debido principalmente al dominio de jugadores europeos como Rafael Nadal y Roger Federer.
El año pasado, 2,6 millones de estadounidenses sintonizaron el Abierto de Estados Unidos, frente a los 5,5 millones de 1991, según la firma Nielsen Co.
