Aumentan muertos en Florida por virus transmitido por mosquitos
TALLAHASSEE, EE.UU. (Reuters)- Cuatro residentes de Florida murieron por una enfermedad transmitida por mosquitos que normalmente afecta a caballos, reportaron el martes funcionarios de salud mientras el pantanoso estado entra en su temporada más alta de dolencias originadas en esos insectos.
Funcionarios de salud dijeron el mes pasado que dos residentes del área de Tampa habían muerto por encefalitis equina oriental, una enfermedad viral que inflama el cerebro.
Dos muertes adicionales por la enfermedad conocida como EEE por su sigla en inglés han sido confirmadas desde entonces, una en Tallahassee, la capital del estado y otra en el pueblo de Sopchoppy, en el noroeste de Florida.

El Departamento de Salud de Florida también está investigando otras dos enfermedades menos letales transmitidas por mosquitos, el Virus del Nilo Occidental y el dengue.
La EEE y el Virus del Nilo Occidental han sido detectados en 43 de los 67 condados de Florida, mientras que los casos de dengue fueron confirmados en dos condados del sur del estado, Monroe y Broward, según el Departamento de Salud.
El dengue comenzó a aparecer en Florida en el 2009 luego del último gran brote ocurrido en 1934.
Al menos 28 casos confirmados de dengue local se reportaron en Florida este año, junto a 67 casos en los que la enfermedad se contrajo en el extranjero. Esta es más común en Centroamérica y Sudamérica.
