Informarán sobre costos a pacientes sin seguro
Orlando, Florida. (EFE)- Una nueva ley que entrará en vigor el 1 de enero en Florida obligará a los hospitales a dar un estimado de los costos de tratamientos y procedimientos médicos a los pacientes.
Se trata de la nueva Ley de Derecho a la Información del Consumidor, y que es una enmienda a la Ley de los Derechos y Obligaciones de los Pacientes de Florida.
Esta legislación tiene como objetivo ayudar a los miles de residentes de Florida que carecen de seguro médico a tomar decisiones educadas a la hora de buscar un servicio de salud planificado, que no caiga en la categoría de emergencias.
El estimado, que deberá ser hecho por escrito, de manera detallada y en un lenguaje de fácil comprensión, deberá además reflejar las políticas de costos del centro médico o del médico.
Los hospitales y galenos no afiliados con el gobierno deberán además publicar en lugar visible de la sala de recepción, el sitio electrónico en internet, donde los pacientes pueden encontrar un informe detallado sobre los costos regulares de los procedimientos médicos más comunes para adultos y niños.
Del mismo modo, los centros de salud y los médicos deberán ofrecer a los pacientes información sobre donde encontrar detalles sobre sus políticas de descuentos y sobre la existencia de servicios caritativos y de seguro de salud a los que pudieran ser elegibles, incluyendo información sobre el Medicare y el Medicaid.
La Ley del Derecho a la Información del Consumidor también provee una multa para médicos, hospitales y centros de salud que no cumplan con proveer a los pacientes dicha información.
Con cerca de 3 millones de personas, el 31 por ciento de origen hispano, que carecen de seguro médico la información detallada sobre los costos de servicios de salud será una herramienta útil, según indica la ley para que estos puedan tomar decisiones en cuanto al tratamiento y procedimiento médico a seguir basado en sus habilidades económicas y la comparación de costos entre centros de salud.
Particularmente útil pudiera ser para miles de padres de familia que necesitan tomar decisiones de procedimientos médicos para sus hijos, ya que según Familia USA, un organismo sin fines de lucro con base en Washington y que vela por la accesibilidad a servicios de salud económicos, 1 de cada seis niños, ó 797.000 menores en Florida, carecen de seguro médico.
Conocer el costo de los procedimientos médicos mejoraría las posibilidades de las personas que no disponen de seguro, ya que de acuerdo con la Fundación Robert Johnson, el 40 por ciento de los residentes de Florida no buscaron el año pasado un tratamiento médico debido a los costes de los mismos.
Entre otras leyes que también entrarán en efecto el 1 de enero en Florida se encuentra la que establece que los empleados públicos, después de pasar el año de probatoria requerido, sólo podrán ser despedidos por causas determinadas, al tiempo que las agencias municipales y gubernamentales deberán tener en cuenta los años de servicios antes de promover o despedir a un empleado.
A partir del primero de enero las agencias de cambios de cheques serán sometidas a auditorías frecuentes por parte del Estado, según otra nueva ley de protección al consumidor.
