Norma, la tabaquera de Fidel Castro
LA HABANA. (AFP)- Con sus manos pequeñas torció miles de los más grandes puros cubanos, los Cohiba Lancero, que con su destreza y ojo sagaz también fueron los más exquisitos: 14 años como torcedora para Fidel Castro, Norma Fernández se ocupa hoy del Behike, el habano más exclusivo de todos los tiempos.
De traje sastre negro de ejecutiva, Fernández, de 57 años, no tiene reparos en volver a la silla de torcedora para revelar secretos centenarios del oficio, capaz de conversar mientras sus manos se mueven ágiles.
Está acostumbrada a escuchar. En cada salón, desde hace tiempo, alguien lee periódicos o novelas para los torcedores de puros. Con la modernidad, aunque no siempre con éxito, la radio a veces sustituye al lector.
La historia de Norma corre con la de la fábrica El Laguito, lujoso caserón de mitad del siglo XX -oeste de La Habana-, abierta por Fidel Castro y su secretaria personal, Celia Sánchez, como escuela de torcedoras.
Hasta entonces, las mujeres sólo llegaban a ‘despalilladoras’ -que quitan los nervios mayores a la hoja- o ‘escogedoras’ de los tipos de hojas.
Sentadas de cuatro en cuatro por mesa, bajo una luz de neón, las torcedoras miran las hojas clasificadas (‘ligadas’), toman un puñado, según el tipo de puro, lo enrollan, cubren con una hoja mayor y lo cortan con una ‘chaveta’ sobre un pedazo de mármol. De ahí resulta la’”tripa’ y el ‘capote’, que toma forma en una presa y es cubierto por la ‘capa’, hoja más fina, elástica y de mejor color, que dará el aspecto final.
Norma es tabaquera desde los 17 años. Torció Cohiba Lanceros y Panetelas -más pequeño- para Castro, con quien conversó “en dos o tres ocasiones”: “Me dijo que hacía un tabaco muy bueno”, sonríe orgullosa.
En 1986, Fidel dejó de fumar y Norma de torcer. Nombrada jefa del Departamento de Producción, es responsable de calidad del sello más exquisito del portafolio de Habanos, que guarda 27 marcas y más de 200 vitolas del -según muchos expertos- el mejor tabaco del mundo.
Ahora le encomendaron la fabricación del Behike, un 40% más caro que el habano mejor cotizado (20 a 25 dólares cada uno), hecho con hojas de ‘medio tiempo’ -las dos superiores-, que no brotan en todas las plantas, obtenidas de los tres mejores vegueros de Cuba como el curtido Alejandro Robaina.
El Behike, línea del Cohiba presentada en tres vitolas, “tiene una ligada muy parecida al Cohiba (tradicional), pero quise que fuera más aromático”, dice Norma, que emplea hojas añejadas entre 2000 y 2003.
Algunos iniciados escogen un puro por el color. Pero Norma revela que la capa sólo aporta el 7% del sabor. El gusto definitivo lo da la proporción de tres tipos de hoja tomadas en la ‘ligada’: la que aporta fortaleza (‘ligero’); aroma (‘seco’) y calidad de combustión (‘volado’).
Norma confiesa que fuma puros para meditar o en fiestas con amigos, aunque sigue prefiriendo fabricarlo para el paladar más exigente.
