BOGOTA. (Reuters)- Al menos nueve guerrilleros murieron el lunes cuando comandos del Ejército asaltaron campamentos de las rebeldes FARC en una zona selvática en el sur del país, informó la institución armada, tras varios ataques el fin de semana que dejaron bajas en ambos bandos.
El asalto ocurrió tras uno de los más sangrientos fines de semana del 2010, cuando murieron 24 rebeldes y miembros de las Fuerzas Armadas, así como dos civiles, en combates en el suroccidente y el nororiente del país, en medio del conflicto armado más extenso del hemisferio.
“Las Fuerzas Militares asestaron un nuevo y contundente golpe a las FARC que hasta el momento arroja la muerte en combate de nueve integrantes del bloque sur de esa organización narco-terrorista”, precisó un comunicado del Ejército.
El ataque de la fuerza pública colombiana se produjo a menos de un mes de que asuma como presidente Juan Manuel Santos, ex ministro de Defensa del mandatario Alvaro Uribe, que estuvo al frente de importantes golpes contra líderes de esa guerrilla.
Los rebeldes se encontraban en una zona situada en el río Suncillita, cerca al municipio de Cartagena del Chairá, en el departamento de Caquetá, cuando fueron atacados por miembros del Ejército hacia las 4.00 hora local (0900 GMT) del lunes.
Uribe reportó el domingo la muerte de 12 insurgentes en la campaña emprendida por las Fuerzas Militares para capturar o matar al máximo líder de las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC), alias Alfonso Cano, en una montañosa región del sureño departamento de Tolima.
Mientras que en el nororiental departamento ganadero y petrolero de Arauca, fronterizo con Venezuela, 10 miembros del Ejército murieron cuando fueron atacados por rebeldes de las FARC que pretendían colocar cargas de dinamita a varias torres de conducción de energía.
En tanto que dos miembros de la Policía Nacional y dos civiles fallecieron el sábado en el sudoccidental departamento del Cauca por un ataque de la guerrilla de las FARC, grupo considerado terrorista por Estados Unidos y la Unión Europea.
Uribe, fuertemente apoyado por Estados Unidos, acorraló en sus ocho años de Gobierno a los guerrilleros izquierdistas, que aún poseen una fuerte capacidad de combate en regiones rurales del país.
Por otro lado, 18 rebeldes de la guerrilla del Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) entregaron sus armas a tropas en el sureño departamento de Nariño, en una de las más grandes desmovilizaciones de ese grupo armado ilegal en lo que va del 2010.
El ELN es más pequeño que las FARC, con alrededor de 4.000 miembros.
Según un comunicado del Comando General de las Fuerzas Militares, la desmovilización se produjo por presión de las tropas que cubren el estratégico triángulo de Telembí, en la zona rural de Barbacoas, cerca de la frontera con Ecuador, una región muy usada para el tráfico de armas y narcóticos.
