Ejército de Colombia reporta muerte de 11 guerrilleros del narco ELN
BOGOTA. (Reuters)- Once combatientes de la segunda mayor guerrilla izquierdista de Colombia murieron el viernes en un ataque de las Fuerzas Militares en el noreste del país, cerca de la frontera con Venezuela, un día después de que fuera reportado el deceso de 18 policías y soldados en tres ataques rebeldes.
El comando del Ejército Nacional en la zona informó que el ataque, apoyado por aviones y helicópteros de la Fuerza Aérea, se realizó cerca al municipio de Saravena, en el departamento de Arauca, una próspera región petrolera y ganadera en donde aún mantienen presencia algunas columnas rebeldes.
El campamento atacado pertenecía al Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN), la segunda fuerza guerrillera del país que dice contar con unos 5.000 combatientes.
El grupo guerrillero, que en sus comienzos fue integrado por sacerdotes católicos radicales, tuvo protagonismo en el conflicto interno colombiano en la década de 1990 por sus ataques con explosivos contra la infraestructura petrolera y energética del país.
Recientemente, el ELN criticó al presidente Juan Manuel Santos por negar la posibilidad de que gobiernos extranjeros auspicien acercamientos para un diálogo de paz.
A finales de la década de 1990 ejecutó varios secuestros masivos para presionar al Gobierno del entonces presidente Andrés Pastrana a iniciar un diálogo de paz.
Pero el ELN fue debilitado militarmente por una ofensiva del Ejército y de los escuadrones paramilitares, a lo que se sumó un enfrentamiento por el control territorial de varias regiones del noreste con las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC), el mayor grupo guerrillero que opera en la nación sudamericano.
El grupo rebelde mantuvo en Cuba conversaciones de paz con el Gobierno del ex presidente Alvaro Uribe, pero se negó a iniciar una negociación que permitiera su desarme y reincorporación a la vida civil.
ATAQUES CONTRA FFAA
El bombardeo contra el ELN se produjo un día después de que fuera divulgado que 14 policías murieron en un ataque de las FARC en una carretera del selvático departamento del Caquetá, el peor revés militar desde que asumió el poder Santos, el pasado 7 de agosto.
De acuerdo con los informes oficiales, los guerrilleros instalaron cargas explosivas que detonaron al paso de los vehículos en los que se desplazaban los uniformados, a quienes dispararon tiros de gracia e incineraron.
El hecho de violencia obligó a Santos a desplazarse a la zona para presidir un consejo de seguridad y revisar las estrategias en los movimientos del Ejército y de la Policía.
“Mi corazón está con las familias de estos héroes de la patria que murieron cumpliendo su deber, policías y soldados”, dijo el presidente en un acto de Gobierno en el que rindió un homenaje póstumo a las víctimas con un minuto de silencio.
Otros cuatro militares murieron el jueves en dos ataques de las FARC en los departamentos de Nariño y Norte de Santander.
Aunque Uribe lideró desde el 2002 una ofensiva militar apoyada por Estados Unidos que obligó a los rebeldes a replegarse a apartadas zonas selváticas y montañosas, las FARC aún mantienen presencia en remotas áreas y su capacidad de golpear a las Fuerzas Armadas.
Santos, quien fue ministro de Defensa de Uribe y dirigió importantes golpes militares y políticos contra la guerrilla como el bombardeo en el que murió el líder rebelde Raúl Reyes y el rescate de la ex candidata presidencial Ingrid Betancourt, ha prometido mantener la ofensiva contra las FARC.
El actual mandatario ha condicionado el inicio de un diálogo de paz con los rebeldes a que liberen a los secuestrados, suspendan sus hostilidades y comuniquen públicamente su voluntad de deponer las armas.
Aunque los asesinatos, los secuestros, los asaltos a pueblos y los ataques con explosivos contra la infraestructura económica del país se han reducido, al igual que el conflicto, esporádicamente se registran ataques y actos de violencia cometidos por los rebeldes.
